Hoping Kevin Costner Doesn’t Screw Up New Superman Movie

Waterworld

So Kevin Costner will play Clark Kent’s father in the new Superman movie. (The headline says “adoptive father”, but that’s obvious because Clark Kent is Superman’s Earth name. The correct way to say it would be “Kal-El’s adoptive father.” Geek Gold Card, people.)

Jonathan Kent is a very important part of Clark Kent’s worldview. The values Superman has — Truth, Justice, and the American Way — come from his Earth parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent. (Aside: I know that Superman isn’t real, it’s just easier to talk about the character without constant qualifiers.)

While it would be difficult to imagine that this new Superman movie could ever be worse than Superman IV, casting is important. I didn’t start watching Smallville until after Jonathan Kent, played by former Duke of Hazzard Jonathan Schneider, died. The general consensus is that he did a nice job in the role, though.

The Christopher Reeve Superman movies (you can get all four of them on DVD for $9.99 at Amazon, which is a very good deal even though Superman IV kinda stinks) didn’t do a lot with the Jonathan Kent character, although his death was a big deal in the first movie, if I recall correctly.

Basically, I’m hoping Kevin Costner doesn’t screw up the new Superman movie somehow. No offense, Kev. It’s just that I’m old enough to remember Waterworld. That was a long time ago, though, so he’s probably learned his lesson.
