Comics And Robin Williams Collide (Links)

There’s a series of panels in the graphic novel ‘The Watchmen’ in which Rorschach (probably my favorite character in the book) delivers the following ‘joke’:

Man goes to doctor. Says he’s depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says, “Treatment is simple. Great clown, Pagliacci, is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up.” Man bursts into tears. Says, “But doctor, I am Pagliacci.”

Here’s the “joke” as portrayed in the movie version of ‘Watchmen’.

Personally I prefer the original, which you can see at ComicBook.com, or right here.

Watchmen Pagliacci

For anyone wondering what the hell this has to do with Robin Williams, here is the explanation from ComicBook.com:

Echoing the series’ central question of “who watches the watchmen?” the joke poses the question of “who makes the clown laugh?” It’s a question many fans find themselves asking with Williams’ passing. So many fans turned to him and his work for cheering up when they were down, but who was there to do the same for him?

If you, or anyone you know, is struggling with depression, remember that the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s is open 24/7, and that the number is 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

I appreciate that they put in the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s phone number. If there is anything we can learn from Williams’ untimely demise, it’s that suicide is not a joke and not limited to those whose lives appear to be crappy. Depression is very real and should be taken seriously.

Our condolences to Robin Williams’ family, friends, and loved ones.

Keith Richards Is Writing A Children’s Book

Keith Richards is writing a children’s book. With his daughter. It’s about the first time he played the guitar, according to the BBC.

English: Keith Richards, live in Hannover

Here’s a bit more of a description:

“Gus and Me: The Story of My Granddad and My First Guitar is a “rare and intimate look” into his early years.”

I’d read it. Here’s a bit more from the BBC:

Richards was introduced to music by his grandfather, jazz musician Theodore Augustus Dupree.
It will be published as a hardback and ebook later this year.
“I have just become a grandfather for the fifth time, so I know what I’m talking about,” said Richards.
“The bond, the special bond, between kids and grandparents is unique and should be treasured. This is a story of one of those magical moments. May I be as great a grandfather as Gus was to me.”

That’s nice. Isn’t that nice? Good ol’ Keith.

Here’s a video of Keith onstage in Abu Dubai in February of 2014. He’s still got it, fans still love him… grandpa Richards was wise to introduce lil’ Keith to the geetar.

Let’s Get More Excited About Space Travel

Here’s an idea. Instead of endless reports about Justin Bieber and other mindless crap, let’s get more excited about space travel.

Captain Video And His Video Rangers

(This isn’t a picture of real space travel. It’s Captain Video and His Video Rangers. Old TV show.)

Live streaming video by Ustream

(By the way, the latest Bieber news, as of this writing, is that Usher flew to be by Justin’s side and offer emotional support or something. In case you’re curious. Who says this isn’t the DaddyTips age of having your cake and eating it too?)

On January 23, 2014, three days ago, NASA launched a Next-Generation Relay Satellite. No, not Star Trek: The Next Generation. Something real. The TDRS-L Satellite. Launched by NASA. Frickin’ NASA! And they broadcast the launch live on Ustream! And I didn’t even know! (The video is archived and embedded above. I was wrong. The video embedded above appears to be NASA’s live Ustream channel. Sorry. Here is a link to the video of the launch.)

Nobody cares. Why doesn’t anyone care? We should really care about this a lot more than we do.

Why should we care? Read more »

The Play Doh Royal Baby And Family

You may have heard something about the royal baby. But have you seen the royal baby and family rendered in Play-Doh? You’re about to.

Play-Doh Royal Baby and Family

What’s that you say? You haven’t heard anything about this? Are you sure? It kind of took over all forms of media, social and traditional. Son of Catherine (aka Kate Middleton), Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince William? Grandson of Queen Elizabeth II? Future King of England? Not ringing any bells?

OK, I had to look up everybody’s names on CNN because I’m not a big royal watcher. But I’m not a royal hater either. The truth is that people seem to be genuinely interested in the royal bambino, just as they were with the royal wedding. (Sorry, I should probably say Royal Wedding.) I don’t begrudge people their distractions. (Avengers movie, cough cough.)

Whatever your opinion on all things royalty, I think we can all agree that the Play-Doh Royal Family is an impressive piece of work. According to information we received, it was made entirely from Play-Doh, using over 30 cans of the stuff, and took over five hours. (That sounds pretty fast to me, actually.)
